St. Paul's Episcopal Church, begun in 1736, is the second-oldest church building in North Carolina. The churchyard is the final resting place of three Colonial-era governors, along with Josiah Collins II.

The church itself is a beautiful example of colonial ecclesiastical architecture, and its peaceful grounds offer a contemplative escape in the heart of the historic district.
