Penelope Barker House
Known as "Edenton's Living Room" — site of the 1774 Edenton Tea Party, the first women's political protest.
The Penelope Barker House is an 18th-century Georgian mansion overlooking Edenton Bay, known affectionately as "Edenton's Living Room." It holds a remarkable place in American history as the site of the 1774 Edenton Tea Party — the first organized political protest by women in America.
Fifty-one women, led by Penelope Barker, signed a resolution boycotting English tea and cloth in support of the colonial cause. Today the house serves as the Welcome Center for Historic Edenton.
OUR INSIDER TIP
"The house serves as the Edenton Historical Commission Welcome Center — a great first stop."
