Visit Website →Beaufort (pronounced "BO-fort" — don't let the South Carolina version confuse you) is one of North Carolina's most enchanting coastal towns. Founded in 1709, it's the state's third-oldest town, and its compact historic district is packed with beautifully preserved homes, waterfront boardwalks, and maritime heritage.
The real magic of Beaufort lies just offshore. Take a ferry or boat tour to Shackleford Banks, where wild Banker horses — descendants of Spanish mustangs — roam the pristine barrier island. Carrot Island, visible from the waterfront, is home to another herd of wild horses that you can often spot with binoculars from town.
The North Carolina Maritime Museum is outstanding and free, telling the story of Blackbeard's ship Queen Anne's Revenge, which was discovered just offshore. The waterfront itself is alive with fishing boats, sailboats, and an energy that's authentically coastal without being touristy.
It's a longer drive from the farm, but absolutely worth it — especially combined with a stop in Little Washington on the way down.
OUR INSIDER TIP
"Take the ferry to Shackleford Banks to see the wild horses up close. The Maritime Museum is free and fascinating. Combine with a stop in Little Washington for a full day trip."
