OUR PICK

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge

One of the best places on the East Coast to observe black bears in their natural habitat.

DISTANCE

45 minutes

BEST TIME

Year-round, best in fall (October-November)

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge offers exceptional opportunities to view black bears, especially during the fall months when they are actively foraging before winter. The refuge spans over 110,000 acres of pocosin wetlands, providing critical habitat for the highest density of black bears on the East Coast.

The landscape itself is otherworldly — vast stretches of pocosin bog, ancient peatlands, and dense shrub thickets that have remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. It's a glimpse into a primordial North Carolina that few ever see.

Best viewing times are typically early morning and late afternoon, particularly in October and November when bears are feeding heavily on agricultural crops adjacent to the refuge.

OUR INSIDER TIP

"Bring binoculars and arrive early. The bears are most active at dawn and dusk. Stay in your vehicle and maintain a safe distance."
